Les 40es Rencontres Internationales d’Archéologie et d’Histoire ont porté sur les pratiques du paraître de l’humain, de la préhistoire à l’actuel, à travers le monde. De ce thème ambitieux est né un recueil d’études aux approches et réflexions très diverses, émanant d’archéologues, de préhistoriens et d’historiens, d’anthropologues, de philosophes et d’artistes. L’art du paraître est ici exploré à travers le corps, ses modifications, ses enveloppes, ses artifices et ses parures ; dans le temps, au cours du cycle de vie et au moment de la mort ; dans l’espace, à travers les images, les œuvres d’art, les représentations en mouvement ou statiques. En se fondant sur des exemples éloquents, la lecture pluridisciplinaire que propose ce livre met en évidence des formes d’apparence de soi d’une grande richesse et tente d’en saisir les significations socio-culturelles.  The 40th International Meetings of Archaeology and History have focused on the practices of human appearance from Prehistory to the present day throughout the world. This ambitious theme has brought forth a collection of scientific papers with multiples approaches and reflections emanating from archaeologists, prehistorians and historians, anthropologists, philosophers and artists. The art of human appearance was explored throughout the body, its modifications, envelopes and adornments ; in time, during the life cycle and at the moment of death ; in space, through images, artworks, static or moving representations. Based on eloquent examples, the multidisciplinary reading proposed in this book highlights forms of the extremely rich self-representations and attempts to grasp their socio-cultural meanings.
