Face au dérèglement climatique et environnemental qui menace notre quotidien, les études littéraires peuvent contribuer au basculement de perspective invoqué de toutes parts. Bien avant la crise contemporaine qui invite à repenser la place de l’anthropos au sein du vivant, trois romanciers et une romancière se sont montrés sensibles aux liens qui se tissent entre l’humain et les règnes du vivant : Louis Pergaud, Colette, Maurice Genevoix et Jean Giono. Ils surent, dans leurs récits, intégrer l’altérité animale au sein de l’une des plus hautes activités de l’esprit humain : l’invention littéraire.Fondé sur une définition de l’empathie fournie par la psychologie, les neurosciences et les sciences humaines, inspiré par l’écopoétique et la zoopoétique, cet essai analyse les modes de représentation stylistiques d’une conscience non-humaine, notamment animale, chez quatre auteurs dont l’habileté poïétique nous reconnecte avec la vie et son élan. In the face of the climate and environmental upheavals that threaten our daily lives, literary studies can contribute to the shift in perspective being called for from all sides. Long before the current crisis—one that urges us to rethink the anthropos within the living world—three male novelists and one female novelist were already attuned to the intricate bonds between humans and the living kingdoms: Louis Pergaud, Colette, Maurice Genevoix, and Jean Giono. In their narratives, they succeeded in integrating animal alterity into one of the highest expressions of the human spirit: literary creation.Drawing on definitions of empathy from psychology, neuroscience, and the humanities, and informed by ecopoetics and zoopoetics, this essay examines the stylistic modes of representing non-human consciousness—particularly that of animals—in the works of four authors whose poetic mastery reconnects us with life and its vital force.
