Marguerite de France hérite en 1361 des comtés d’Artois et de Bourgogne. Veuve, elle exerce désormais seule son autorité sur ces terres unies par le mariage de Mahaut d’Artois et Othon IV de Bourgogne. In 1361, Marguerite of France inherited the counties of Artois and Burgundy. As a widow, she could exercise her authority by herself over these lands, which had been united by the marriage of Mahaut of Artois and Othon IV of Burgundy. In an age of structural changes in the way principalities were governed, Marguerite firmly ruled her lands, even as they were affected by war. She was able to transmit her legacy: first to her son Louis of Male, then to her grand-daughter Marguerite of Male and to her husband Philippe the Bold.
