| Summary, etc. | En 1923, un jeune autrichien, Leopold Weiss, sillonne le Moyen-Orient et rédige des carnets pour la Frankfurter Zeitung. De Jérusalem à Malte, en passant par Le Caire et Damas, en train, en voiture, à pied, il parcourt sept mois durant la Palestine alors sous mandat britannique. Son récit tient à la fois du journal de voyage classique (lieux visités, portraits de personnages rencontrés) et de réflexions plus politiques. Leopold Weiss est fasciné par le mouvement national arabe naissant. Il critique l'établissement d'un foyer juif et sent que les Palestiniens arabes n'abandonneront jamais leur terre. Son récit est emblématique d'une génération qui chercha en Orient « une vérité spirituelle du monde ». Leopold Weiss se convertit à l'islam et participa plus tard à la création du Pakistan, comme le rappelle Florence Heymann. |
