Si Rome a bénéficié d’un gouvernement central et d’une bureaucratie efficaces, d’une armée professionnelle bien entraînée, d’un appareil monétaire stable et d’un système juridique fonctionnel, l’Empire a pourtant fini par décliner et disparaître.On a longtemps attribué les succès puis les échecs de l’Empire au fait que sa richesse et sa splendeur ne résultaient pas d’une économie performante, mais de l’exploitation que subissaient les pauvres et les provinces. Cet ouvrage brasse un grand volume de nouvelles données archéologiques qui modifient la vision historiographique établie : il montre en effet que la société romaine pratiquait très largement le commerce et avait développé une production qui impliquait des innovations technologiques considérables. |
