| Summary, etc. | Promotor e interveniente nas célebres "Conferências do Casino", hisrtoriador da literatura, introdutor em Portugal dos estudos linguísticos e da pedagogia, Adolfo Coelho (1847-1919) foi também - a par de Teófilo Braga, Consiglieri Pedroso, Leite de Vasconcelos e Rocha Peixoto - uma das figuras decisivas na constituiçaos e desenvolvimento inicial da antropologia em Portugal. É no interior deste quadro genérico que a obra atnológica de Adolfo Coelho deve ser situada. Perspectivando a etnologia como uma disciplina preferencialmente vocacionada para o terreno português - "qual poderá (…) ser o estudo mais digno de um povo senão o estudo de si próprio" enfatizará ele num texto de 1896 - Adolfo Coelho afirma-se de facto, em premeiro lugar, como um dos mais destacados "cultores" da literatura e das tradições populares. |
