Le très sérieux magistrat Luc Agathange Louis Gros (1814-1886) l’a étudié passionnément dans un manuscrit inédit intitulé Traité du Baguenodier ; manuscrit qu’il a tenu, tel un journal intime, tout au long de sa vie. Ce Traité, d’apparence anodine, présente un intérêt qui dépasse l’attention discrète qui lui a été réservée jusqu’à maintenant. Le présent ouvrage le réhabilite en offrant une étude historique et mathématique très complète du baguenodier. Il propose également des considérations plus générales sur l’histoire du système binaire mobilisé dans la résolution du casse-tête, sur l’histoire des récréations mathématiques et sur l’utilisation didactique des jeux dans l’enseignement. Tout public versé dans la culture mathématique et ludique, curieux de connaître comment se construisent les sciences, et en quête d’activités en classe basées sur la manipulation, y trouvera aisément son compte. |
