| Summary, etc. | À en juger par sa réception dès l'Antiquité, la nature de l’œuvre d’Horace qu’on a nommée Art poétique ne semble pas devoir être mise en question. On tient là le pendant latin de la Poétique d’Aristote, c’est-à-dire un bréviaire technique transposant dans la Rome augustéenne les vues aristotéliciennes, sans doute enrichies d’apports alexandrins, en matière de théorie littéraire. Toutefois, un examen attentif des particularités énonciatives et stylistiques du texte invite à réviser ce jugement séculaire. Mobilisant la langue instable du sermo, l’œuvre prend les traits d’une épître adressée à des destinataires précis, les Pisons, dont le statut textuel est ici revalorisé. La démarche de renouvellement interprétatif peut même aller plus loin si l’on considère la pluralité des images poétiques qui jalonnent le texte ; ce dernier, affranchi de sa dimension strictement théorique et rendu à sa singularité, apparaît alors comme un poème, au sens fort, sur l’art de la poésie.
