| Summary, etc. | Si aujourd’hui, on parle d’histoire de l’art au féminin, c’est grâce à Linda Nochlin (1931-2017), dont l’essai intitulé Pourquoi n’y a-t-il pas eu de grands artistes femmes ?, a fait grand bruit à sa parution, en 1971. Le présent ouvrage retrace la vie et le parcours intellectuel de cette historienne de l’art américaine en articulant histoire de l’art et études de genre. À travers une relecture de ses travaux, dont de nombreux inédits en français, il positionne le féminisme de Nochlin au sein d’autres formes d’engagement. Il montre que son œuvre peut être lue comme un engagement enthousiaste et constant pour la cause de groupes marginalisés, à l’écoute desquelles l’historienne de l’art a passé sa carrière, sous le double signe de l’ouverture et du dialogue. Il démontre que l’engagement a non seulement été un principe fondateur et un moteur des recherches de Nochlin, mais aussi qu’il a constitué une force libératrice qui lui a permis de révolutionner sa discipline. |
